Emotional Abuse
Though there are no obvious physical signs of verbal and emotional abuse, these forms of cruel treatment can be one of the most harmful forms of nursing home abuse. Emotional and verbal abuse occur when a staff member says or does something that is detrimental to the nursing home resident's self-esteem. This includes cursing, criticizing, and calling the residents insulting and demeaning names, as well as humiliating, intimidating, ignoring, or threatening the resident. Talking down to seniors, treating them like children, and communicating in baby talk are additional forms of verbal and emotional abuse. In some cases, elderly nursing home residents become targets for overworked staff members to vent their frustrations, which creates a situation that is harmful to the residents' emotional well being.
If you notice that your loved one is exhibited any of the following behaviors, this may be a sign that he or she is suffering from verbal or emotional nursing home abuse:
- Emotionally upset, anxious, or agitated
- Withdrawn and non-communicative
- Humiliating, insulting, frightening, threatening or ignoring behavior towards family and friends
- Wishing to be isolated from other people
